Hot dog

Ken is a Food Network watching, me food hunter and gatherer kind of guy, so when we go traveling, I am usually in charge of finding accomodations (making house) and he is in charge of searching for food places. When he is quietly on the computer days before we leave, then I know he is plotting our food travels.

With that in mind, after getting into LAX at 9 pm, we headed out to La Brea (about 30 minutes away) and Ken stood in line for one hour for our hot dogs from Pink’s Famous Hot Dog stand. I kid you not, at 10 pm on a Tuesday night in LA, the line was still one hour long. There are so many choices that it’s rather overwhelming. We decided, in true foodie wannabe fashion, that we would try a different hot dog for every person present. We tried the chili cheese nacho dog; mushroom and swiss cheese dog; pastrami and saurkraut dog; and the Today Show dog which is a double hot dog with chili, onions and guacamole. It was an experience to stand in line, order and watch the guys make the hot dogs. It was even cool to avoid the well dressed guy that was actually trying to panhandle. Was it a great hot dog? No, not especially, but it doesn’t matter. The next time they talk about historic food landmarks on the Food Channel, we can say, “hey we went there – Pink’s.”

As I sit merily along the river I see an itsy bitsy spider come up the water spout. Down came humpty dumpty and the cow jumped over the moon. The moon was not to hot not to cold but just right. Then suddently Jack and Jill took a great spill into an amazing candy house. The witch came out and fatened em up. She was about to cook them when they escaped. As they left the little old witch yelled “I’ll get you my pretty”. Then she through out her magical beans there grew a great beanstalk. While Jack and Jill go up the hill they encounter a hollow tree where they find a sleeping girl just sitting there. So they give her all the medicine possible. But all the men’s horses and all the kings men could never put her back together again.
The End

Whole Foods Kahala Mall

Whole Foods Kahala Mall

So the picture doesn’t quite fit with the story. It is a picture of the impressive cold case at the front of the Whole Foods Kahala store. Of course after I took this with my phone, the security guard said no pictures…but on to the story.

So Cat sends me to get a specific brand of peanut spread from Whole Foods since I was on Oahu. No problem, everyone loves a $7 jar of peanut butter… so I buy and throw it in my bag. Of course I was only there for a day so I didn’t check anything in when I went to the airport. As I go through security, they pull my bag and search it…the peanut butter. Two options, leave it or check it in. Of course there was only one option since I was not about to abandon a $7 jar of peanut butter that my wife specifically wanted me to get. So I abandon my mom in her wheelchair and leave her sitting in the airport with our other stuff while I go back and check in the peanut butter. The cream filling in cocoa puffs from Liliha Bakery is ok, so is the filling in a lilikoi chiffon pie from Hamura’s on Kauai. Tonkatsu sauce from Marukai, no problem…but watch out for that peanut butter! p.s. did I mention it was $7?

Obama Inauguration
As I get older, I realize that there are certain things that need to be pointed out to my children as “historic” and things that as a family, it’s important to experience together. This morning, given the opportunity to sleep, my body woke up at 4:45, antsy and ready to get up. I put on the tv and started watching the inauguration coverage and decided that this would be another moment that my kids need to see so I put some homemade Portuguese sausage in the pan and started waking up the boys. Together we watched the crowd interviews, saw all the former presidents and dignitaries and on our way to school we listened to Obama’s speech live.
We didn’t talk much about the ramifications or the importance of this event, but we shared it and were silent. I think sometimes I don’t need to always teach at teachable moments. I think it’s enough to remember together and tInauguration Speechhey will bring with them whatever the experience wants to teach them without my guiding anything. They show me in other ways and at other times that yes, they’ve been absorbing and they have their own thoughts about it. It’s not necessarily what I would have taken from the experience, but it’s their personal experience too. As a control freak, part of my growing up is letting go of control and having faith that putting opportunities and experiences in front of the kids is enough.
